Atlas of America's Polluted Waters
Total Maximum Daily Load Program
United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water
A report from EPA that includes maps showing waters within each state that do not meet
state water quality standards. States listed these waters in their most recent submission to
EPA, generally, in 1998, as required by section 303(d) of the U.S. Federal Clean Water Act.
This provision of the Clean Water Act requires a "total maximum daily load" or TMDL for each
listed water. A key feature of the 1998 lists of polluted waters is that, for the first time,
all states provided computer-based "geo-referencing" data that allow consistent mapping of
these polluted waters. The maps are color coded to indicate the type of pollutant causing
the pollution problem. And, bar charts show the types of pollutants impairing stream/river/coastal
miles, and lakes/estuary/wetland acres. With downloadable pdf files.

BEACH Watch
Office of Water / Office of Science and Technology
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
On BEACH Watch you can see if the water at a specific beach is being
monitored, who is responsible for the monitoring, the pollutants that
are being monitored, and if advisories or closures have been issued
at U.S. coastal and many inland beaches. U.S. EPA intends to conduct
this survey each year. The results of its 1999 annual beach survey,
reflecting swimming conditions at 1,891 beaches, showed over a quarter
(459) of the reported beaches were affected by at least one advisory or
closure, most due to elevated bacteria levels, primarily from sewage or
storm water overflows. The site has interactive digital maps of U.S.
Beaches; EPA Beach Reports and Technical References; and links to
other Federal, State and Local Water Quality Protection Programs.

Digital Tectonic Activity Map
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (USA)
The Digital Tectonic Activity Map (DTAM) is a new visualization tool for both
researcher and educator alike to better understand tectonic activity of our
planet for the past 1 million years. DTAM is a Geographical Information System
(GIS) that displays a realistic synoptic view of present global tectonism by
filling in the cartographic gap between conventional geological maps and plate
reconstruction maps. The DTAM was created using current global datasets of
seismicity, volcanism, and plate motions that were integrated with topography
and bathymetry measurements derived from satellite gravity data. Macroscopic
structural features were integrated via field studies from various researchers,
space geodesy, and space-borne imagery (e.g. astronaut photography, Landsat).
This integrative technique provides a new and unique visualization tool that
presents an actual representational view of global tectonics rather than the
traditional schematic illustrations (i.e. plate maps) of the past. In English.

of the Institute's work is the recognition that the pressing problems
of environmental degradation, regional and global poverty, and
political tension and conflict are fundamentally interrelated,
and that long-term solutions must consider these issues in an
interdisciplinary manner. The Pacific Institute's program areas

Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS), The
The central mission of GTOS is to provide data for detecting, quantifying,
locating and giving early warning of changes in the capacity of terrestrial
ecosystems to sustain development and improvements in human welfare.
GTOS will help find answers to five key questions:-
What are the impacts of land use change and degradation on sustainable
development? Can the land produce enough food for the world's
future population?
-
Where, when and by how much will demand for freshwater exceed supply?
-
Where and when will toxic pollutants cause major threats to human
and environmental health and the capacity of ecosystems to detoxify them?
-
Where and what type of biological resources are being lost, and
will these losses irreversibly damage ecosystems or human progress?
-
What are the impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems?
GTOS will be a permanent observing system for the world's key
managed and natural ecosystems. The system is based on a
five-tier data sampling strategy involving large-scale studies of
the Earth's major environmental gradients, agricultural and
ecological research centres, field stations and a gridded series of
some 10,000 sampling sites. In English, French and Spanish.

WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water - Water Quality
World Health Organization (WHO)
The WHO released updated guidelines for drinking water quality
in September 2004. The guidelines recommend a holistic,
systematic approach towards water quality regulation and management
in order to prevent water-related disease, including preventative measures,
such as ensuring that local wells are not at risk from contamination.
The new guidelines reflect reviewed and revised
recommended values for chemical limits, and set out practical approaches
to discount some chemicals and prioritize others.
The updated guidelines also include applications for
emergencies and disaster situations.

World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC)
The
WCMC provides information services on conservation and sustainable use
of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop information
systems of their own. WCMC programmes concentrate on species, forests,
protected areas, marine and freshwaters; plus habitats affected by
climate change such as polar regions. WCMC also addresses the
relationship between trade and the environment and the wider aspects of
biodiversity assessment. WCMC maintains a large and varied collection of
databases concerning nature conservation, developed in collaboration
with a range of partners. Conservation databases include:
-
Species - Databases on the world's threatened animals and plants,
including access to
-
1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals,
-
1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants and
-
World List of Threatened Trees

Protected Areas - This link includes the 1997 UN List of National
Protected Areas and other information
