AirData : Access to Air Pollution Data
United States Environmental Protection Agency

The AirData Web site gives you access to air pollution data for the entire United States. AirData produces reports and maps of air pollution data based on criteria specified by viewers. AirData presents annual summaries of air pollution data from two EPA databases:
*AQS (Air Quality System) database provides air monitoring data - ambient concentrations of criteria air pollutants at monitoring sites, primarily in cities and towns.
*NEI (National Emission Inventory) database provides estimates of annual emissions of criteria and hazardous air pollutants from all types of sources.
The NEI database in 2002 replaced two separate EPA databases for emissions of criteria air pollutants (National Emission Trends, or NET) and hazardous air pollutants (National Toxics Inventory, or NTI). In English.

Air Facility System
United States Environmental Protection Agency
Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance

The Air Facility System (AFS) contains compliance and permit data for stationary sources regulated by the U.S. EPA and state and local air pollution agencies. AFS is used by some state and local government agencies to track permit data. In 2001, EPA changed the Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS) to a database that is solely related to tracking the compliance of stationary sources of air pollution with EPA regulations: the Air Facility Subsystem (AFS). In English.

Air Quality Subsystem, Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS),
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
AQS contains measurements of ambient concentrations of air pollutants and associated meteorological data. The data is collected by thousands of monitoring stations operated by EPA, national, state and local agencies. EPA uses this data to assess the overall status of the nation's air quality and to prepare reports to Congress as mandated by the Clean Air Act. EPA also uses the data to identify areas where improvements in air quality are needed. Locations where air pollution exceeds federal standards are called Non-Attainment Areas.

Atlas of America's Polluted Waters
Total Maximum Daily Load Program
United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water

A report from EPA that includes maps showing waters within each state that do not meet state water quality standards. States listed these waters in their most recent submission to EPA, generally, in 1998, as required by section 303(d) of the U.S. Federal Clean Water Act. This provision of the Clean Water Act requires a "total maximum daily load" or TMDL for each listed water. A key feature of the 1998 lists of polluted waters is that, for the first time, all states provided computer-based "geo-referencing" data that allow consistent mapping of these polluted waters. The maps are color coded to indicate the type of pollutant causing the pollution problem. And, bar charts show the types of pollutants impairing stream/river/coastal miles, and lakes/estuary/wetland acres. With downloadable pdf files.

On BEACH Watch you can see if the water at a specific beach is being monitored, who is responsible for the monitoring, the pollutants that are being monitored, and if advisories or closures have been issued at U.S. coastal and many inland beaches. U.S. EPA intends to conduct this survey each year. The results of its 1999 annual beach survey, reflecting swimming conditions at 1,891 beaches, showed over a quarter (459) of the reported beaches were affected by at least one advisory or closure, most due to elevated bacteria levels, primarily from sewage or storm water overflows. The site has interactive digital maps of U.S. Beaches; EPA Beach Reports and Technical References; and links to other Federal, State and Local Water Quality Protection Programs.

Chemical Right-to-Know Initiative
Office of Pollution Prevention, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
The Chemical Right-to-Know Initiative responds to an EPA study that found that very little basic toxicity information is publicly available on most of the high production volume (HPV) commercial chemicals made and used in the United States. Without this basic hazard information, it is hard to make sound judgments about what potential risks these chemicals could present to people and the environment. The Initiative is an ambitious effort to tackle this problem by rapidly testing chemicals and making this important data available to scientists, policy makers, industry, and the public.

Digital Tectonic Activity Map
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (USA)

The Digital Tectonic Activity Map (DTAM) is a new visualization tool for both researcher and educator alike to better understand tectonic activity of our planet for the past 1 million years. DTAM is a Geographical Information System (GIS) that displays a realistic synoptic view of present global tectonism by filling in the cartographic gap between conventional geological maps and plate reconstruction maps. The DTAM was created using current global datasets of seismicity, volcanism, and plate motions that were integrated with topography and bathymetry measurements derived from satellite gravity data. Macroscopic structural features were integrated via field studies from various researchers, space geodesy, and space-borne imagery (e.g. astronaut photography, Landsat). This integrative technique provides a new and unique visualization tool that presents an actual representational view of global tectonics rather than the traditional schematic illustrations (i.e. plate maps) of the past. TOMS Global Aerosol Hot Spots
Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS)
National Space and Aeronautics Administration, U.S.

TOMS provides global measurements of total column ozone on a daily basis. TOMS Global Aerosol Hot Spots page shows the location of smoke from global fires in near real-time. The site also contains a complete data set of daily ozone from November 1978 - December 1994. Continuous observation of the global ozone past the year 2000 will monitor the expected recovery of ozone as levels of chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) decrease from their current maximum as a result of the Montreal Protocol limits. Data products include Ozone, Aerosols, Erythemal UV, and Reflectivity. With map image files, quicktime videos of the Antarctic Ozone Hole, and its historic expansion from 1979-1997. With additional educational material.

TOXMAP
National Library of Medicine
National Institutes of Health (USA)

TOXMAP is a web site that uses maps of the United States to show the amount and location of toxic chemicals released into the environment. Data is derived from the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) (http://www.epa.gov/tri/), which provides information on the releases of toxic chemicals into the environment as reported annually by industrial facilities around the United States. TOXMAP helps users create nationwide or local area maps showing where chemicals are released into the air, water, and ground. It also identifies the releasing facilities, color-codes release amounts for a single year, and provides multi-year chemical release trends, starting with 1987. Users can search the system by chemical name, chemical name fragment, and/or location (such as city, state, or zip code).
