AirData : Access to Air Pollution Data
United States Environmental Protection Agency
The AirData Web site gives you access to air pollution data for the
entire United States. AirData produces reports and maps of
air pollution data based on criteria specified by viewers.
AirData presents annual summaries of air pollution data from
two EPA databases:
*AQS (Air Quality System) database provides air monitoring data
- ambient concentrations of criteria air pollutants at monitoring sites,
primarily in cities and towns.
*NEI (National Emission Inventory) database provides
estimates of annual emissions of criteria and hazardous air pollutants
from all types of sources.
The NEI database in 2002 replaced two
separate EPA databases for emissions of criteria air pollutants
(National Emission Trends, or NET) and hazardous air pollutants
(National Toxics Inventory, or NTI). In English.

AIRS Graphics on the Web or AGWeb
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Access to maps and charts of air pollution information. Specify criteria, such as pollutant name and amount;
AGWeb produces a map and displays it in your Internet browser.
The data for AGWeb maps and charts comes from EPA's Aerometric Information
Retrieval System (AIRS). There are two main types of data: air quality measurements and pollutant
emissions estimates.

Atlas of America's Polluted Waters
Total Maximum Daily Load Program
United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water
A report from EPA that includes maps showing waters within each state that do not meet
state water quality standards. States listed these waters in their most recent submission to
EPA, generally, in 1998, as required by section 303(d) of the U.S. Federal Clean Water Act.
This provision of the Clean Water Act requires a "total maximum daily load" or TMDL for each
listed water. A key feature of the 1998 lists of polluted waters is that, for the first time,
all states provided computer-based "geo-referencing" data that allow consistent mapping of
these polluted waters. The maps are color coded to indicate the type of pollutant causing
the pollution problem. And, bar charts show the types of pollutants impairing stream/river/coastal
miles, and lakes/estuary/wetland acres. With downloadable pdf files.

Atlas of United States Mortality
Released to the public on April 14, 1997, this atlas
is the first to show all leading causes of death by
race and sex for small U.S. geographic areas referred
to as Health Service Areas (HSA's). The 18 causes of
death included in this atlas account for 83 percent
of all deaths in the United States during 1988-92.
In addition to maps with age-adjusted death rates
for each HSA, the atlas includes maps that compare
each HSA rate to the national rate, smoothed maps
for each cause that show the broad geographic patterns
at selected ages, and a chart with regional rates for each cause of death.

CommonGIS - Common Access to Geographically Referenced Data
Esprit Project
CommonGIS will unlock large volumes of statistical,
geographically referenced data available from providers
by providing an easy-to-use tool for accessing and
visualizing such data. Via the Internet, users would
need only to select data, a map of the area, and hit the
button: „Visualize". A thematic map will be automatically
generated, which can be further explored using direct,
visually apparent manipulation techniques. Two
existing Java-based tools, a GIS product and a
prototype for the automatic, knowledge-based
generation of thematic maps will be further
enhanced and integrated. The tool development
will go hand in hand with its application,
evaluation and validation at different user sites.
Common GIS EC Projects:
-
EURIPIDES (European Information Project Involving Demographic and Economic Statistics). A project aiming to
provide a conveniently accessed source of demographic and economic statistics for small administrative areas across Europe.
-

developed by EPA's Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention
Office and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to
assist front-line chemical emergency planners and responders. They
can use CAMEO to access, store, and evaluate information critical
for developing emergency plans. CAMEO also can be used with a
separate software application called LandView III to display EPA
environmental databases and demographic/economic information to
support analysis of environmental justice issues. The CAMEO system
integrates a chemical database and a method to manage the data,
an air dispersion model, and a mapping capability (MARPLOT). Available
in Macintosh, Windows, and DOS formats. The software may be
downloaded at no cost. The site also contains training materials
and links to CAMEO users.

Digital Tectonic Activity Map
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (USA)
The Digital Tectonic Activity Map (DTAM) is a new visualization tool for both
researcher and educator alike to better understand tectonic activity of our
planet for the past 1 million years. DTAM is a Geographical Information System
(GIS) that displays a realistic synoptic view of present global tectonism by
filling in the cartographic gap between conventional geological maps and plate
reconstruction maps. The DTAM was created using current global datasets of
seismicity, volcanism, and plate motions that were integrated with topography
and bathymetry measurements derived from satellite gravity data. Macroscopic
structural features were integrated via field studies from various researchers,
space geodesy, and space-borne imagery (e.g. astronaut photography, Landsat).
This integrative technique provides a new and unique visualization tool that
presents an actual representational view of global tectonics rather than the
traditional schematic illustrations (i.e. plate maps) of the past. In English.

World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC)
The
WCMC provides information services on conservation and sustainable use
of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop information
systems of their own. WCMC programmes concentrate on species, forests,
protected areas, marine and freshwaters; plus habitats affected by
climate change such as polar regions. WCMC also addresses the
relationship between trade and the environment and the wider aspects of
biodiversity assessment. WCMC maintains a large and varied collection of
databases concerning nature conservation, developed in collaboration
with a range of partners. Conservation databases include:
-
Species - Databases on the world's threatened animals and plants,
including access to
-
